"I don't think writing is any kind of job; it's a way of life." - Stephen King Over the course of his career, Stephen King has written over 50 novels and countless short stories. The success of his books led him to be listed as one of America's richest authors, with an estimated net worth in 2007 at $400 million. Known for writing thrillers that are sometimes called literary horror fiction, King received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2000 and won British Fantasy Society's August Derleth Award in 2003. He was also inducted into the Horror Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2007. Stephen King was born to Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King, on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. He is the only child of his father's second marriage . When he was two years old, his family moved to Durham, Maine where he spent the rest of his childhood. He has said that he has flashes of memory from early childhood as if some other person were present and reliving those experiences. Those flashes would often involve him watching someone else play an adult game with him and re-enacting those events as a child himself. King attended Lisbon Falls High School, but was expelled at the age of 15. It is said that his expulsion was due to his poor work attendance and the pranks he played on other students. After high school, King attended the University of Maine at Orono (UMO). During this time, he began publishing short stories in magazines like "Startling Mystery Stories". King graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1969. After graduating from UMO, King married Tabitha Jane Spruce on June 22, 1971. Their first child, Naomi Rachel King, was born the following year. In 1974 their second child and first son, Joseph Hillstrom King was born. Their third child Gage Scott King was born in 1978. King taught English at Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine for several years until he was hired to teach screenwriting at Gardner- Gardner Academy (now known as the University of Southern Maine) in Portland, Maine, which he did for two years. He accepted an invitation to teach creative writing at Boston University in January 1981. During this time, he published "Salem's Lot", "The Stand", and "Misery". King also sold his first screenplay titled "Cat's Eye" (1985) for $175,000 to producers Mace Neufeld and Paul Monash. This sale helped the film go into turnaround mode and prevented other filmmakers from making it sooner. It became a moderately successful film and led King to write "Cujo". In 1983, King and his first wife divorced. He later married Tabitha Jane Spruce, also his high school girlfriend. They had two children Naomi Rachel King (born 1976) and Joseph Hillstrom King (born 1979). The couples' third child, Matthew Patrick (aka Matt) was born on February 27, 2000. King resides in Bangor with his wife and their four children: Naomi Rachel King (born 1976), Joseph Hillstrom King (born 1979), Matthew Patrick (aka Matt) (b. 2000), and Gage Scott King (born 1978). His youngest son Joseph Hillstrom died on December 26, 2014. cfa1e77820
